You have to make sure you have a decent Grass-type team of 6 ready. Contact any one of the adminds or mods to try out for a gym.

id like to be a steel gym leader
not yet though
i still have to ex train
so i just wanted to make sure there was an open spot

I would like to be a rock gym leader, I just need to train for a while, EV and breeding

i beleive that the steel gym is taken but i don't know you can challenge for gym spots though, i think.

You can still challenge Leaders for there spot, and Steel is not taken

gym teams must be one type, or a monotype team, maybe just maybe, if we have a champion then they will be able to use a mixed team, but that will not be in the near future.
